1960s Couroc of Monterey Black Resin Inlaid Bamboo Serving Tray

Vintage.  Retro 1960s Mid-Century Modern Serving Plate, featuring an inlaid bamboo design. Manufactured by Couroc of Monterey (CA) from approximately mid 1960’s – 1970’s. Beautiful tray is decorated with genuine inlaid wood, metal, and colored textures. Wood and brass inlaid for the bamboo design. Couroc’s founder, Guthrie Courvoisier, worked with a variety of plastics while working in the war effort during WWII. These were sold in high end retail stores in limited quantity.

Couroc’s designs were extremely imaginative and in tune with the various trends of the period and featured many various themes and subjects in their collectibles! Mid-century design always focused on the optimal use of space and convenience!

Condition is rated VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT. This early black resin/polymer is still nice and black. Very slight imperfections from scratches from use on both front and back. Measures 18 in length by 12 1/2 in wide by 3/4 in high. Great addition to your Couroc collection or a nice display piece for a credenza, bookshelf, or mantel.

Couroc (roc standing for “hard as rock”) developed a proprietary formula of black phenolic resin to create durable and handsome trays and bowls, deeming it resistant to alcohol, boiling water and cigarette burns. These pieces were marketed as home bar décor.

Company slogan: Any tray can serve a drink. Only Couroc can start a conversation! Couroc closed its doors in 1998 shortly after celebrating their 50th anniversary.

Embossed “Couroc of Monterey CALIFORNIA”. Still retains its original gold foil label.
