Description

Antique Japanese Nippon Peach Lusterware Creamer and Sugar Bowl Set. Iridescent Hand Painted White Cherry Blossoms design. Made in Japan (Nippon) during the 1920s.

A beautiful example of Japanese Nippon Porcelain Lusterware from the 1920’s. Made in Japan featuring hand painted white cherry blossoms and branches and painted in a peach color base with an iridescent over glaze. Designed to glisten under the glow of candlelight. Since it is hand painted it shows some brush strokes and paint blots on the blossoms. This makes each piece unique. For many Japanese, the blooming of the cherry blossom trees symbolizes human life, transience, and nobleness.

They are both bright and pretty for their age. In exceptional condition with no major flaws, chips, or cracks. There is a white paint drip on back of sugar bowl. I was able to make out the stamp on the bottom of the sugar bowl and it looks like the same on creamer. The backstamp indicates that it was hand painted Nippon. This backstamp was used by Imoto Shoten. The glaze is produced by metallic oxides in an overglaze finish, which is given a second firing at a lower temperature in a “muffle kiln”, or a reduction kiln, excluding oxygen. Antique and vintage lusterware is much sought after by collectors. The intricate cherry blossom pattern in orange and peach adds a touch of elegance to any teatime.

Measurements
Sugar bowl: 3 1/2 in height to handle; 13 1/4 in circumference.
Creamer: 3 1/4 in height to handle and 11 1/2 in circumference.

The set is of Japanese origin and culture, and it is a great addition to any collection of Asian collectibles.

Nippon pottery is Japanese pottery. “Nippon” is the Japanese word for “Japan” and is used to mark porcelain made in Japan specifically for export to the West during a certain period, usually marked with the word “Nippon” on the base. The “Nippon” marking was used on Japanese porcelain primarily between 1891 and 1921. The vast majority of porcelain produced during the Nippon era was manufactured by the company that would later become the modern-day Noritake Company.
