Vintage, Old Store Stock.  MINT Condition. This is beautiful handmade Vintage Native American Pueblo Woman figurine created by Cleo Teissedre of Tucson, AZ in 1987. The figurine depicts a woman holding a string of red peppers in her hand and in the basket below.

• Base (diameter) – 3 1/8 in

Hand painted. Tan, red, brown, black, and turquoise colors. Signed MW 1987. This would make a very nice addition to a collection of Southwest figurines and storytellers.

In front is a traditional wedding vase. A painted Squash Blossom Turquoise necklace is around her neck. Over her shoulders she is wearing a weaved blanket. The figurine story symbolizes a Native American wedding. At the wedding ceremony they will place a weaved blanket over the couple’s shoulder.

A garland of red chili peppers, is a symbol of good luck and personal protection. Ristras are sometimes used for decoration and are said to bring good health and good luck. The pepper’s red color was believed to symbolize the sun.

During the ceremony, the mothers of the couple will bring blue blankets and drape them over their children’s shoulders. The blue blanket symbolizes the sorrow of their lives prior to their union in marriage. It is a symbol of warmth and friendship. The action a wrapping someone in a blanket is a real statement of kindness and a demonstration of honor. In Native American traditions a blanket is used to create and seal relationships.

Turquoise, the captivating sea-green stone of the ancients, represents wisdom, tranquility, protection, good fortune, and hope. Ancient peoples believed in its profound power to protect, as well as its tranquil energy and its association with enduring love. Squash Blossom Turquoise necklace it was traditionally worn as a symbol of one’s status, wealth and cultural belonging.

Cleo Teissedre was well known artist from Tucson, AZ. She was born on Aug. 31, 1930 and passed away on June 25, 2020. She was known for producing Native American-style Navajo Storyteller Pottery pieces. Cleo’s Storytellers and figurines are very sought after.
