This is a beautiful hand-made sand painted Vintage Zuni ceremonial wedding vase. I think the design is sky, clouds and ground or mist with a bear claw underneath. The claw is a symbol of maternity, gentle spiritedness, and strength. It can also stand for mobility or the idea of moving forward in life. The vase has a design on both sides. Clouds are used as a clan symbol in some Native American cultures.

Tribes with Cloud Clans include the Hopi tribe (whose Cloud Clan is named Piikyasngyam,) the Mohave, and the Pueblo tribes. Soft colors of beige, brown, grey and Turquoise encompass the exterior. Double spout Wedding vase. The vase has a Primitive look and feel. The stenciled illustrations stand out a little higher from the main surface area. Artist signed dated 84. This is the last piece of this pottery in my inventory from 1984.

Sand technique is the art of pouring colored sands and powered pigments from minerals or crystals, or pigments from other natural or synthetic sources to make a fixed or unfixed sand painting. The Zuni ascribe healing powers to bears and carve stone bear fetishes to protect them and bring them luck.

A bear’s claw was one of the talismans frequently included in medicine bundles, and warriors in some tribes wore necklaces of bear claws to bring them power and strength.
