Vintage.  Old Store Stock Inventory. 1970s Sterling Silver Howling Coyote Navajo Brooch/Pin.  In Excellent Condition. Made in Arizona, USA.

This is an exquisite vintage Navajo Howling Coyote Sterling Silver brooch pin with turquoise eye.  A round southwest blue turquoise cabochon stone eye hand polished is being held by a saw tooth cut design bezel. The coyote has a lot of detail in the hand stamping and cutting of this design. The coyote design is stamped with sun symbols, moon rays and saw tooth around the neck. This piece is unsigned.  Measures 1 1/2 inches tall and 1 inch wide. Safety Catch on back.

I personally handpicked all of my Southwest Native American Indian silver jewelry on the Hopi, Zuni, and Navajo reservations so I could meet many of the local artists. I took my jewelers cloth and cleaned only the front of the of the coyote leaving the back oxidized so you could see that it is real silver.

The sun on jewelry typically means it certifies that the item is made of sterling silver, and the SUN logo identifies the maker. The SUN is also a manufacturer’s mark and it also lets us know it is made of Sterling Silver. The sun on this piece of jewelry is its stamp or hallmark for the artist. The Coyote, in the mythology and folklore of the North American Plains, California, and Southwest Indians, was the chief animal of the age before humans. For the indigenous peoples of the Americas, the coyote is very sacred. The Coyote is said to be particularly insightful and possessed of great stealth. I always feel special if I see a Coyote when I am watering or working in my yard, taking a photo when I can. They mostly hunt at night when you can hear them howling.
